dusty carpet

People ask me all the time if their allergy symptoms will go away if they have their carpet cleaned. I tell them the same thing every time: “Yes.”

However, there are some things to consider. First, if you have severe allergies to something very specific like cat dander or dust mite poop (yes, that’s a thing), one quick carpet cleaning won’t solve your problems. Things might be a little better, but you’ll probably still have pretty close to the same symptoms. More on that later.

If you just have general allergies to stuff like dust and pollen, a thorough carpet cleaning will get you fixed right up. But there are some special considerations that need attention from you and the pro cleaner you hire.

Carpet behaves like a giant filter. It traps dust, pollen, and stuff we track in from outside. And believe it or not, people with allergies are much better off with carpet than hard floors. That’s because carpet traps dust and debris that would otherwise be flying all over the place on a tiled or wood floor. Like any filter, though, it needs to be cleaned once in awhile. But it’s the type of cleaning that makes the difference.

So here’s my official, professional, super-duper recommendation if you suffer from allergies. If it’s in your budget, have us clean all your carpet twice a year, and have us clean underneath all the furniture. If you can only swing doing it once per year, that’s probably okay, but I suggest moving the furniture yourself and thoroughly vacuuming underneath at least once or twice per year.

If you do that, general allergy symptoms can almost completely disappear. Severe allergy problems that come from something specific like cat dander or dust mites might not go away completely, but you should enjoy noticeable relief.

But remember, the key factor in all of this is a thorough, meticulous carpet cleaning. It can’t be a quick in-and-out job. All the little nooks and crannies need detailed attention. And I can do that for you. If you’d like to schedule an allergy relief cleaning, please call me today and I’ll be happy to get you an appointment.
